Heart pendants were popular in late Victorian times as sentimental keepsakes, often containing photos or hair mementos. Colored stone versions, however, such as this sapphire and diamond pendant, are rare and heralded the turn of the Century. The inclusion of color signified a move away from the conservative, somewhat staid fashions of mid to late Victorian styles towards the softer styles of Edwardian times which lead into the romanticism of the Gilded Era.
